The rapid rise in inflation rates and commodity prices is reducing the capacity of volunteer centers, known locally as “takaya,” which prepare and distribute meals to thousands of needy people, displaced and stranded in combat zones in various cities of Sudan.

"Altakya” is an old Sufi term derived from the word “al-ma’tak”, where the poor and needy find a refuge that provides them with what they can subsist on. However, these “Takaya”, as a symbiotic social inheritance, have returned again in Sudan due to the war to fill the gap of the absence of government authorities and humanitarian organizations.

The hospices are distributed in the three cities of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, and serve tens of thousands of citizens in the affected areas for free, relying for their funding on remittances from expatriates and charitable Sudanese at home.

According to activists in the field of volunteer work, the increase in the prices of meal components, such as legumes, flour, rice, and others, by rates ranging from 100 to 200 percent, reduced the number of meals provided by half during the past weeks. While the number of people unable to meet their daily food needs has doubled, with more than 60 percent of Sudanese losing their sources of livelihood after the outbreak of war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in mid-April 2023.

Because of the decrees of the price of Sudanese pound all prices of basic goods for the nutrious meals has doubled knowing that Sudan is depending on importing a large amount of it’s needs from the outside after 70% of factories were destroyed because of the war.

The fighting left extremely poor humanitarian conditions, especially among the residents of Khartoum, who preferred to remain in their neighborhoods rather than be displaced, but they face the risk of death from shells and bullets and the hardship of living caused by the erosion of citizens’ resources and the interruption of communications and the Internet, which deprived a large sector of financial transfers.
