Cuba is set to vote on a nationwide referendum this Sunday which is expected to approve a new constitution for the socialist-run island.

The initial draft of the constitutional overhaul included landmark proposals such as the approval of gay marriage and the omission of the word "communism" from the country's magna carta. However, after a backlash from some of Cuba's most conservative sectors, these proposals were scrapped.

The final document to be voted on maintains Cuba’s single-party political system and centrally planned economy while recognizing private property and small businesses, which have been part of the island’s economy without formal legal status for more than a decade.

The Cuban government has launched a vigorous “yes” on state-run media and government officials’ social media accounts. The reform is almost certain to pass by a broad margin of Cuba’s 7 million voters.
